How I Doubled, Then Doubled Again My Portfolio of Web Pages, Not Domain Names

First, let’s concentrate on one key fact- it is a web page, not a domain name that has any value. Yes, I know domain names that have never had a website can hold very high value by themselves (short dot-com’s, keywords, etc), but a site with traffic is potentially worth way more money, not to mention residual income from ads or affiliate programs. I recently moved some sites from one server to another, and during that move, I noticed something that instantly offered me a way to double everything, then double that again!

Here’s How it Worked for Me:

I had one shared-hosting account, with about five or ten domains, and as many websites on an older Windows server for many years. I was really impressed with a lot of the WordPress blogs lately and wanted to get into it, but my server couldn’t do WordPress, so I had to move some of the sites that I wanted to make blogs out of.

My original structure was; I had a main site that hosted all the folders of my other sites.

I opened another hosting account on a newer Linux server. And began to move my websites one-by-one to the new server, keeping them intact, so they would keep their organic traffic. That went fine. But all them old pages in those original folders are now part of the old host site.

As I moved each site, I noticed something that triggered a huge a-ha! And I immediately doubled my organic traffic.

A few months after that settled down, I did something else and doubled it again, doubling it a second time. Maybe next year I’ll double it yet again.

This was the bump I was longing for. My websites doubled, and my income from all of my ads doubled. It was very easy to do too.

Here’s what I did:

I had all my websites in their own respective folders on one site, acting as my server, for many years. Then, each domain name I owned, I pointed to a folder in that account. So, that would result in having two ways to get to the same web page- you could go to domain.com/page.html or hostdomain.com/domainfolder/page.html. Are you following me so far?

OK, so I now have all the sites I planned to try WordPress on, moved to another host. I can still go to their old folders, as in hostdomain.com/domainfolder/page.html and the old site is still there. When I did that I noticed the page rank of those former sites was still there- on the old page in the folder, plus the domain name, which is on another server now.

The only problem is, some search engines turn away from duplicate content. So I changed it. I went through each page at the old site, changed all of the internal links to the homepage to hostdomain.com/folder/index.html, and its title and heading from domain.com to hostdomain.com/domain/ and updated all new meta tags, and rewrote some of the content (often by just adding a paragraph at the beginning and at the end), which has effectively doubled my online content, ads and all.

The second time I doubled it, was completely different.

Those same sites I mentioned, that I moved to another server, still had all their organic traffic, so I didn’t touch that. But I installed a WordPress blog in the root folder, so it would act as the domain name’s homepage. This way, I still have my entire old site, plus a blog. Now, anything new I add goes into the blog.

The blog keeps excellent statistics and gets as much traffic as my original site did, effectively doubling my organic traffic again.

I Gained Market Share:

The market these sites serve is a small one. But I gained market share with those moves- by basically creating another brand and competing with myself. It was a lot of work, it took me months- I’m still working on it. But, in this niche, it was huge.

I may do it again too…

When I was a young man of about twenty, I worked for a pretty dumb guy named George, who owned two auto body shops (along with five tow trucks, two business properties and a beautiful home). He couldn’t pronounce a lot of words correctly, his handwriting was impossible to read (unless you were him), and he was very indecisive, changing his mind daily about company goals. He was the richest guy I knew at that time in my life, worth well over 2-million dollars in 1980.

He wasn’t a mechanic or a body-man himself, but had a knack for hiring good ones.

Being a tow truck driver, I had access to the office a lot. After only a month or two I knew exactly how much money they made (about $10-15,000 a week), what their overhead was (about $20,000 a month), and how much they had in their business-checking account ($150,000).

It was easy to see that there was money to be made in this line of work.

However, one thing always puzzled me about George- How could a guy that dumb get so rich? So, I tactfully asked him one day, “How did you get so rich?”

He looked around in deep thought for a few seconds, then said, “I don’t know… I just always worked hard and saved my money.”

At the time (I was about 21, remember), I laughed at the dumb luck. Boy, was I ever the slow-to-learn one. It must’ve been twenty years before I realized he was dead-on. It really is that simple- work hard, and save your money.

Mathematically, it makes sense too. You have to increase your income (make money), or decrease your output (save money); Both sides of the equation are equally valid.

Just as ‘ol dumb George knew, all you have to do is work hard and save money.

I’ll add this- Buy some equipment that makes money. (In George’s case it was tow trucks, auto body shops, frame-straightener equipment, investing in talented employees, etc.)

Traded- One Red Paperclip for a House!

This is a great story. This guy had a big idea- he figured he’d trade his way up from one red paperclip to a house. The young man didn’t own a house yet, and on this wild notion he got one. This is a success story for the ages. And one of the best ideas I have ever heard.

The funny thing is, I thought of doing something similar- trading cars and working my way up to a new one, or at least a super nice one. But I didn’t really stay focused on that idea.

The Million Dollar Homepage Idea

Did you hear the one about some kid who had a million-dollar idea? He figured, since his web page had one million pixels, if he could sell each pixel for one dollar, he’d make a million bucks.
